The HoopKidz/HoopElite movement is headed for another full exciting Basketball season. While the NBA and it's Players continue to negotiate, our young Players are getting ready for their 2011/12 campaigns. New HoopKidz Instructional Basketball offerings are upcoming in Silver Spring and in Jessup/Laurel. HoopElite In-Season Training begins in early November to allow Players to continue to train and improve during the season. Perfect for Middle Schoolers not competing in School leagues this season. And Hoopz Radio DMV is off to a great 3rd season already with shows featuring DeMatha's Mike Jones, Gonzaga HS Coach Steve Turner, ESPN's Reggie Rankin, Howard University's Kevin Nickelberry and other area Basketball professionals talking and providing their insight into the world of Basketball. Upcoming Shows will feature the DMV's Best College & HS Coaches plus our HS DMV Boys & Girls Top Rankings, Games of the Week, Player reviews and more! New HoopKidz Instructional Basketball sessions are starting in early November in both Laurel/Jessup and Silver Spring, MD. The MD Jr. Sports Center is the site of the Laurel/Jessup of a Saturday morning session beginning November 12th and we begin a Thursday evening session in Montgomery County/Silver Spring at a new location, Woodlin Elementary on November 10th. Our In-Season HoopElite Training & Instruction Basketball session was just added to begin on Sunday afternoon, November 5th in response to our Young Players trying to improve in season. Concentration on Shooting, Game Decision Making, Basketball IQ, Offensive work against Zones, Press and Trap Breaking will be emphasized. Intense Basketball training and problem solving to help Players make adjustments and improve game performance during the season. Great for Middle Schoolers not participating in School teams this year (i.e. Prince Georges County not fielding Middle School Basketball teams this year) Registration is available now!

Special Thanks this month to all of our Parents and Trainees who have been patient with all of schedule changes in the past few weeks. Your help and feedback has been especially helpful this fall as we have strived to create more and complete training programs for your children.

HoopKidz/HoopElite Basketball Blog Training Tip: The "Real Crouch"- In training our Younger Players, I have to constantly remind them that they can't just bend over while playing Basketball, you have to really adopt a flexible, agile crouch position to dribble, play defense, and make cuts to the basket. Your back should be arched, you should maintain your balance with foot position and you must work off of your toes. Playing flat-footed and on the back of your heels will render you helpless to quick-cutting opponents...

It's hard to believe that we're in the last few weeks of Summer and that it's almost time for Back to School. While this was a fast Summer season, it was an eventful few months for HoopKidz/HoopElite Basketball. Two great HoopKidz Summer Basketball Camps, several HoopElite Specialty Skill Camps plus our Individual training programs, the Jr. All-American Camps, and more. Thanks to all of Participants and their Parents for what has been our most successful Summer yet.

We still have a few HoopElite Specialty Skill Camps coming up in August before the sun sets on the Summer of 2011. The HoopElite Post-Play/Guard Camp takes place on August 13th and HoopElite Defensive Basketball Camp is on deck, August 20th. Spaces are still available for the specific Basketball skill work in these areas.

*Schedule Change*- Our Hoopz Linx Golf Tournament, originally scheduled for Friday, September 30th has been moved to next Spring. The new date is Friday, May 25th, 2012 at the same course, Lake Presidential at Beechtree in Upper Marlboro, MD. Scheduling conflicts and other commitments caused us to move the Tournament to next Spring. All of our Sponsors have stayed on board for next May. Just completed a great 1st 2011 HoopKidz Summer Basketball Camp with a full capacity group of young campers! We're appreciative to all the families and basketball participants who helped start our Summer off with a bang! Special Thanks goes to Nike, Papa Johns, JDS Awards, the Johnson's, City of Bowie Gymnasium staff for a big start to our 11th Summer Basketball campaign.

July is full of HoopKidz/HoopElite Camps, Clinics and Events. Are you registered yet? The 2nd HoopKidz Summer Basketball Camp is slated for July 25th-28th. Players get better in our Specialty Skill Camps taking place this month. Our July Shooting Camp takes place on July 16th and our Defensive Basketball Camp will be held on July 23rd. It's already February already and HoopKidz/HoopElite has great Basketball programs and Events in motion for an exciting year! It might seem early, but our Spring & Summer HK/HE Basketball Camps & Clinics are available for registration now. We're putting the final touches on planning, commitments, and the completion of some our most attended annual events. The HoopKidz Spring Instructional League is now set for Friday Nights beginning May 6th @the City Of Bowie Gymnasium. This League for Boys & Girls, Ages 3 to 13, is a great way for your kids to receive strong Instruction/developmental work and compete in a structured basketball environment...Summer Camp dates are set for the 11th annual HoopKidz Summer Basketball Camps. The 1st session, June 20-23 and 2nd session, July 25-28 are early sell-outs each year! 2011 Sessions are going to be the our best yet with early commitments from great Basketball Coaches, Players, and Speakers/Experts!Don't wait to register for these sessions. There is a new school of thought with many trainers that you can precede stretching with cardiovascular exercise or even skip the process. We don't prescribe to those theories. While we sometimes start workouts with Jumping Rope, the Stretching regimen is very important particularly with Basketball. Many of our kids are coming off Fall sports- Football, Soccer, Lacrosse, and Fall Baseball. The play of Basketball involves the use of a whole different set of muscles. In addition to play on a completely different kind of surface-Wood vs. Grass/Turf. Make sure you spend a least 10 minutes stretching and warming up before the ball bounces! He/she is all arms and legs, having all types of coordination problems, no balance, etc". Answer- This is common. Fast growth can cause young people all kinds of coordination and balance problems. It's not the end of the world(though it might seem like it for your young kids!). Simple solution- Buy a good Jump Rope. Have your young Player begin jumping every day. 15 minutes to start and then work themselves up to 30 minutes. This will help to build strong Hand, Feet, & Balance skills. Questions I'm most often asked this time of year, "Coach, What should I be doing now for my Game/Skills? and "I've been playing B-ball all Summer, I'm tired or I need a break!" All valid questions/comments. With year round B-ball, you can sometimes OD on Basketball. Plus, there can be a lot of stress put on the bodies of growing kids. It's okay to take a break, but you shouldn't completely break your conditioning routine. Jump rope, run sprints, do plyrometric exercises, swim, ride your bike, etc. Most of all stretch, stretch, and stretch! Stay flexible. Most early season injuries come from poor conditioning. It was a blazing July 2010! Record heat and humidity and great HoopKidz and HoopElite Camps. Our second session HoopKidz Camp in Bowie had great collection of kids and the most competitive Camp teams in a long time! Four games plus the Championship Game for Group 4/NBA were decided at the buzzer! A packed gymnasium saw Ahmad Clark (Bowie, MD Age 13) make a game winning three pointer with no time left on the clock. Special Thanks to all of our campers and their Parents for a great week! Hard to believe it's June already, but this month takes me back to all of the memories of my childhood like being out of School, Vacation, Swimming, Cookouts, and more! But mostly, I remember back to my passion for Summer Basketball. My Summer's were consumed with working on my B-ball skills, playing in various Summer Leagues, and going to and later working at Basketball Camps. All these years later, I couldn't have guessed that my Summer's would still be consumed with Basketball! But, I certainly feel privileged to be able say so... There's a great response so far to all of our Summer Camp offerings. There's still time to register, but don't wait too long. First up in our Camp offerings is our popular HoopElite Shooting Camp on Saturday, June 19th. This Specialty Camp is an intense, one day Camp designed to improve Shooting Skills & Techniques, Shooting Form/Rotation, Offensive Moves for Shooting, 'Muscle Memory' Skill development and more! This is the best Shooting instruction in the DMV! A DVD of each player receiving Shooting instruction, HoopElite T-Shirt, and Expert Shooting Instructor,
Dale Lambreth (Thomas Stone) and Brian Magid(Paint Branch)... Our 1st HoopKidz Summer Basketball Camp, for Boys & Girls, ages 3 to 13 begins on June 21st. On the same day, our 1st Summer camp in Tidewater, VA begins in Glouscester, VA at the Ware Academy. HoopKidz VA Director, Charles 'Chaz' Johnson is excited about the response in that area. Four great days of the Area's Best Instructional Basketball and Teaching program filled with top flight basketball instruction, Special guests, and fun!

Did you sign up your HoopKidz for the iHoops Skills Challenge yet? HoopKidz/HoopElite Basketball is presenting an official area-wide inaugural iHoops Skills Challenge, Saturday, February 20th, 2010 at 6 PM at Silver Spring International Middle School, Silver Spring, MD 20910.

It's free to participate! This national basketball Skills competition for Boys & Girls, ages 9 to 14, is an opportunity to showcase their B-Ball abilities in a time-based, half-court obstacle course-similar(less complicated) to the NBA Skills contest held at the All-Star Game each year. The iHoops Skills Challenge focuses on b-ball skill development while encouraging participation in the game. Kids from all over the DC Metropolitan area will compete.

1st Place Champions from our competition will have the opportunity to advance to one of the 29 Regional competitions occurring in NBA team markets with those winners advancing to the National Finals in Orlando, FL (Disney Complex). In what was the quickest calendar year I can remember in a long time, it is our sincerest wish that you and yours have a wonderful Holiday Season. Don't Forget!- HoopKidz will playing this month at Comcast Center at Half-Time of the Men's University Of Maryland vs. William & Mary game, Wednesday, December 30th, 2009. Game time is 7:30 PM. Remember, for this game there is limited Roster availabilty to participate. On a first come, first on basis, all current and former HoopKidz, Boys & Girls, Ages 8 to 14 can participate (NCAA regulations stipulate no player can be out of the eighth grade). For each child participating, three(3) tickets and a Jersey must be purchased. The three(3) ticket minimum is $51 (a discount $17 per ticket plus a $5 Jersey cost) Additional tickets for Family and Friends are available for a discount rate of $18 per ticket. Game time is 7:30 PM For this game, there is limited availabilty for our kids to participate. The Roster for the game will be filled on a first come, first serve basis. We had a great group of kids who came in for the those sessions and worked especially hard at improving their skills. We've finished up our HoopKidz Instructional sessions in Owings Mills(Baltimore) and Silver Spring for the school year with a great group of kids. Dwayne's local teammates include Dante Cunningham(St.John's/Potomac) and Maurice Sutton (Largo)... We're holding our first DC/MD/VA HS Seniors Showcase on Wednesday, April 22nd. This event is for graduating Seniors still seeking College Basketball playing scholarships and opportunities... The City of Bowie Gymnasium will hold a Basketball Fundrasier for HoopKidz Summer Basketball Camp Counselor, Leon Willis on Friday, April 3rd, 2009 at 6PM. Willis, who graduates from Virginia State University in May, was an All-CIAA performer this season. The benefit is to help fund Leon's tour of Europe this Summer with the all CIAA Basketball team... *Late News- HoopKidz Summer Director, Coach Gerald Moore passed suddenly of an apparent heart attack on December 11th, 2008. Coach Moore was Head Boys Basketball Coach at Northwestern High in Hyattsville, MD and won two MD State 4A Championships at Friendly High School in Ft, Washington, MD. Coach Moore played at and attended Hampton University with HoopKidz Director David Dickerson. Our sincere condolences to his wife, Tamara and daughters, Casey and Sommer...

And we're equally saddened on the loss of our dear friend and supporter, Mrs. Dorothy Banks, Mother of Medaris Banks. Mrs. Banks, who passed after a long illness, leaves her son, Medaris, daughter-in-law, Bobette and grandchildren, Nia and India. She will be dearly missed by all who crossed her path... HoopElite & HoopKidz Counselor, Alexis Abraham(Riverdale Baptist, Towson Univ.) becomes eligible to play this season for Delaware State...New Hope Academy begins their Basketball season, November 15th... 1st quarter Report Cards are out this week and we've already received some great early reports... Many Thanks and well wishes to all of Fall HoopElite trainees on the upcoming Basketball seasons... We've received just a few responses on the upcoming HoopKidz/Navy Basketball Games. This is our annual trek over to Annapolis for our kids to play before and at half-time of a Navy Collegiate game. This year, two dates have been set, Sunday, November 30th vs. Delaware (for Ages 9 thru 13 at half-time, 7PM) and Tuesday, December 30th vs. Longwood Univ. (Ages 3 to 9 for pre-game, 4 to 5 PM). Our participation will depend on your participation and commitment. Tickets are $3 for Family and Friends, our kids are free and Pizza provided by Navy for the players after the games. All current and past HoopKidz are eligible to participate. This has been a great family event for us for the last four years. It's Halloween Week, so that can only mean that the 'official' Hoops season is upon us! I add 'official' because Basketball season has now morphed into a year-round schedule for all ages and levels of competition. While we love Basketball and teach Basketball skills year-round, we also feel that our kids should participate in a full range of sports and other activities. That said, it's time for Basketball season preparation!... Thanks to all of our Kids and their parents for their efforts in our just completed 1st Fall session in Bowie. The Instructional League wraps up this weekend and we've got a great group preparing for their upcoming seasons. Up next, our Wednesday Fall Instructional session in begin November 5th and our 1st Fall Owings Mills/Baltimore session at New Town High School begins on Saturday, November 8th! If your kids have been involved in Football and Fall Soccer, these sessions are a great opportunity to reclaim their 'Basketball legs' and skills. Spaces are still available for both. Midnight Madness, the official start for the upcoming College Basketball season begins this week and that only means High School and Youth basketball season are just a short few weeks behind! Our kids have just a short time to get prepared. HoopElite will hold our preseason Post Play & Guard Camp this Friday, October 18th & Saturday October 19th at the City of Bowie Gymnasium to emphasize specific Position Play for all Boys & Girls , Ages 7 to 17 wishing to strengthen their skill set before the season begins. Feature Coaches include our own Dale Lambreth(Head Coach, Thomas Stone), Mark Edwards and David Adkins(DeMatha), and HoopKidz/HoopElite's Pam Kirkland(Seton Hall). Don't miss this last opportunity at great instruction before the season starts... Upcoming weekly preparation for our kids starts with the start of next HoopKidz Instructional Basketball sessions beginning November 5th(Wednesdays) in Bowie and our 1st Fall sessions in Owings Mills/Baltimore beginning November 8th(Saturdays) at New Town High School in Owings Mills, MD. The new dates for our All-Girls Skills Camp is Friday, November 7th and Saturday, November 8th! Fridays times are 6:30 to 9 PM and Saturday 9 AM to 1 PM. Our Post Play/Guard Camp dates have been moved to take place on Friday, October 17th and Saturday, October 18th. Times are Friday, 6:30 to 9 PM and Saturday, 9 AM to 1 PM.
